Pastoral visitors needed!
Our Pastoral Care Team could use your help for a few hours each week. We have a number of parishioners who are housebound, some temporarily shut-in, some who are lonely and some unwell. An occasional visit or even just a phone call from someone who cares can be a great blessing. We would gladly provide some training and support if you feel you could help out. Please contact David Swift through the church office.

Circling the Globe with Love
St. James Anglican Church Women of Carleton Place hosted a meeting on September 10, which featured three local individuals involved in mission and development work with children from around the globe. They shared their stories of hope and inspiration.
Mary lives in north India where she has seen first-hand the needs of disabled children in rural areas. Since 2003, she has been co-ordinating a program for children with physical and intellectual disabilities and hearing impairment. Through the work of the program’s team members, needy disabled children and their families receive individualized rehabilitation, attend special learning centers, receive family education and support, and are assisted to access medical and dental check-ups.
Tom Affleck is the president and one of the founders of SchoolBOX. Tom is from Almonte and has an Honours degree in International Development from the University of Guelph. Tom has lived and worked in Guatemala, Peru and Nicaragua. He is dedicated to improving the education sector in Central America and splits his time between Canada and Nicaragua. Tom is deeply committed to serving SchoolBOX and its partner schools in his role as President of the organization.
“SchoolBOX is committed to supporting the right of every child to a basic education. Our organization is driven by a sense of responsibility and love towards the children, teachers and schools that we serve. Education is the best weapon that we have in the war on poverty. Every child dreams. An education gives them the skills and confidence to realize them.”
It is Tom’s desire to build up an organization that fosters openness, integrity, and trust. He sees his work with SchoolBOX as an opportunity to live out his Christian faith.
"It is so much more than educational supplies; it is instilling hope in children and their communities to have faith in themselves and a brighter future."
Mary Sherwood has been working as a missionary for almost 25 years. She first served in the Solomon Islands, South Pacific, and taught at Selwyn College. She later lived with and taught at two Melanesian Sisterhood Training Centers for young women. She worked in the Solomon Islands for seven years and then ,while visiting Madagascar and the Bishop Remi Rabenirina; new doors were opened to Mary. One of the needs they discussed was a priority of the Bishop’s and the Diocesan Mother’s Union the establishment and development of an orphanage for orphaned, abandoned or extremely neglected children.
In 1995 she moved to Madagascar where she spent the next eight months at language training school. She and the Mother's Union Ladies then began to establish the orphanage, Akany Famonjena as well as the later creation of a new centre called Akany Tafita, a newly constructed outreach centre which reaches out to children and young adults in a very poor district of the capital city, Antananarivo. Mary, who resides in Carleton Place, continues her active involvement in Madagascar. She is currently home and is in process of once again visiting sponsor churches in Ontario and the U.S.A., in order to encourage the sponsor’s relationship with the marvelous ministry for children in Madagascar.
